Emu Plains is on the western side of the Nepean River, located at the foot of the Blue Mountains. It is the central hub for the surrounding smaller suburbs of Leonay and Emu Heights.

Prior to European settlement, the Western Sydney-based Darug people inhabited the land, living off the plentiful resources it offered.

European settlement of the area dates from 1808 with the village developing as one of the earliest settlements of Penrith City. Then the first British explorers mistakenly thought the land was an island and named it Emu Island after the emus they sighted. A government farm operated from 1819 until 1832, then the land was sold and private settlement began and the area was renamed Emu Plains.

With the Nepean River separating the suburbs, settlement was slow until the railway line and quarry opened in the late 1800’s. On June 2, 1907, the new Railway Bridge opened over Nepean River and Victoria Bridge became a road for traffic only.

On 25 October, 1963, Emu Plains was transferred from the Blue Mountains City Council to Penrith City Council and significant growth continued from 1960 through to the 1980’s.

As one of the oldest districts in the Penrith Local Government Area, Emu Plains features a number of landmark buildings and sites available to visit, including:

  • Emu Plains Railway Station – built from sandstone and featuring Tudor chimneys, is now on the Heritage list
  • The Arms of Australia Inn – built in 1833 has been restored and today is used as a museum operated by Nepean District Historical Society
  • St Paul’s Anglican Church was built in 1848 and still offers Church services today
  • Melrose Hall – opened in 1934 and named after aviator C.J. Melrose

Local shopping complex, Centro Lennox, services residents’ needs, offering two major supermarkets – Woolworths and Aldi; Post Office, Newsagent, hairdressers, bakery and many other shops.

In a prime position, only a five minutes’ drive to Penrith, and surrounded by peaceful views of the Blue Mountains to the west and Nepean River to the east, Emu Plains is enriched by the beautiful Jacaranda trees and all the nature has to offer.
